THE WRIGHT BROTHERS FIRST FLIGHT!
Man Takes to the Air at Kitty Hawk, NC
New York Tribune
December 19, 1903
First-rate coverage of the history-making flight made at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, an event ignored or disbelieved by many other newspaper editors and reporters. Page 3 contains the amazing report (certainly amazing to readers!) titled: “FLYING MACHINE WORKS.” “Successful Trial by Ohio Men with Machine on Box Kite Frame.” The four-paragraph report begins: “Norfolk, Va. Dec. 18–A successful trial of a flying machine was made yesterday, near Kitty Hawk, N.Y. (sic), by Wilbur and Orville Wright, of Dayton, Ohio. The machine flew for three miles in the face of a wind blowing at the registered velocity of twenty-one miles an hour, and then gracefully descended to earth at the spot selected by the man in the navigator’s car as a suitable landing place. The machine had no balloon attachment but gets its force from propellers worked by a small engine.”
Complete as issued, 16 pp., and in very fine condition especially considering that most newspapers of this vintage have simply fallen apart. Ultra rare–for the very finest of collections.
