THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY

DISPLAYABLE GRAPHIC FRONT PAGE HEADLINE: “PACIFIC BATTLE CONCLUDED.”

Full width banner headline, “PACIFIC BATTLE CONCLUDED.” Front page headlines, a map of the area and details of the naval fight which virtually turned the tide of the war against Japan. I love the superb photograph of Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.  Subheads: “JAPANESE REPORTED WITHDRAWING. BULK OF JAP SEAPOWER INVOLVED.” The stirring news on the front page, in part,“The triumphant United States Navy continued to deal fire and steel vengeance to the remnants of a powerful Japanese force from the opening attack on Midway Wednesday until contact was lost with the fleeing enemy. The battle came just six months after Japan’s sneak attack on Hawaii. Admiral Nimitz, earlier had reported the sinking of two and perhaps three Japanese aircraft carriers and the destruction or damage of 11 to 13 other enemy warships. He added, also significantly, that all the planes on the two definitely sunken carriers were lost; that one or two other enemy carriers were damaged (they, too, were actually sunk!) and most of their aircraft gone.”

For WWII reading buffs, there is also news that the British were driving back Gen. Rommel’s (the “Desert Fox”) tanks in the N. Africa.  And this “loaded” issue even has headlines from the Russian Front where Germany was bogged down in a desperate conflict with Stalin’s forces.

Superb condition, except previous owner cut out several comic strips. I would recommend this issue be framed for an office or den.  I can’t count how many times I’ve seen the major motion picture “MIDWAY” starring Charlton Heston!
