REMARKABLE SKETCH OF THE CONFEDERATE IRONCLAD “MERRIMAC”

hw-merrimac-fp-ill.jpgHarper’s Weekly, New York
November 2, 1861

A large front page illustration “THE REBEL STEAMER “MERRIMAC,” RAZED AND IRON-CLAD,” published fewer than five months prior to the legendary “Monitor-Merrimac” battle in Hampton Roads. Short description from a mechanic who worked on the former Union sailing ship that was later burned at Norfolk by retreating Union forces to keep her from falling into Confederate hands. The Southerners than restored the vessel and renaming it the “C.S.S. Virginia.” Many other Civil War illustrations, including a Confederate submarine! (See the scans)

Other Civil War woodcut illustrations show the naval batteries off Fortress Monroe (Norfolk), and a super front page sketch of Henrico County Jail, Richmond…from a sketch actually drawn by a Union prisoner! Plus, there are two woodcuts from the Army of the Potomac including a favorite of mine: “THE PICKET-GUARD.” You’ll have to see the others for yourself.

16 pages, complete and original. Great condition, too! This would be really nice to frame! One is in my Naval collection, but this one is just as nice.

$275
