INAUGURATION OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
“….I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” …President Abraham Lincoln, March 4, 1865, Inaugural Address
Lowell Daily Citizen and News, Lowell, Massachusetts
March 5, 1861
This extremely historic original newspaper contains a report on the first Inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, and a complete printing of Lincoln’s Inaugural Address. In regard to the secession of many Southern states, the new president says, in part, “….no state upon its own can lawfully get out of the Union….and that acts of violence within any state or states against the authority of the United States, are insurrectionary, or revolutionary….I therefore consider that in view of the Constitution and the laws, the union is unbroken, and to the extent of my ability, I shall take care, as the Constitution itself expressly enjoins upon me, that the laws of the union be faithfully executed in all the states.”
This newspaper also contains numerous advertisements for “cure-all” pills and medicines (some illustrated) guaranteeing to conquer virtually every known disease from coughs to cancer! I’ve read these over and over again–the whole family will get a kick out of this.
Four pages, superb condition, cut cleanly at spine for microfilming years ago probably at the Library of Congress. A real opportunity for the Lincoln collector, Civil War historian, or student of American history. Reasonably priced, too.
