Truman announces his startling decision to relieve MacArthur of command of the troops in Asia, since the General wanted to expand the Korean War against Communist China. Nice photo of MacArthur and his successor Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway, and also Lt. Gen. James A. Van Vleet who succeeded Ridgway. The major report begins: “President Truman fired Gen. Douglas MacArthur Wednesday on grounds that he had failed to support–and publicly sought to change–the grand strategy of the United Nations’ war against Red aggression in Korea.” And, in another report, GOP leaders were trying to get Gen. MacArthur back to the U.S. to address a joint session of Congress with his side of the controversy.
