SCARCE CAROLINA PRE-CONFEDERATE NEWSPAPER

The Semi-Weekly Raleigh Register
March 27, 1861

This very scarce Carolina pre-Confederate issue publishes an ad for the Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut, which offers “Colonel Sam Colt’s Revolving Fire Arms. Pistols, Rifles, Carbines, and Shot Guns.” including illustrations super illustrations (see scan). In the news, there are reports hoping that Civil War will not break out in the United States. (North Carolina would secede from the Union two months later–the last Southern state to join the Confederacy)

SOUTHERN SLAVERY: first, there is an amazing notice for a NEW AUCTION HOUSE specializing in Negro Slaves, along with another firm. I also see an ad headed: “SEVENTY-FIVE NEGROES WANTED.” And, speaking of “reparations,” the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company advertises to insure Negro slaves!

A very rare Southern newspaper published just a few weeks before the attack on Fort Sumter. 4 large pages in fine, clean condition. A true prize!
